The Team Associated Vintage Championship has come to an end
I competed in the 1989-1993 class with the JConcepts equipped RC10 1989 Stealth Car and in the 1994-1998 class with the RC10B3. The B3 was pretty easy start to finish, not a lot of tuning, mostly driving and getting accustomed to some 2wd buggy racing. This is the first time running the Cayote speed control on the 1:10th class so there was quite a bit of learning to do, but I made up some time over the course of the event.
I only broke 1 part the entire event and it was on the last corner of a TQ run during round 3. One CVA roll pin broke on the final jump and corner before the start / finish line. Other than that, it was an easy weekend on parts. I ended on JConcepts Groovy fronts and Double Dee’s V2 rear all in green compound mounted on Mono wheels. I preferred open cell front inserts and closed cell rears most of the event. Thanks to Larry Genova at Kustom RC Graphics for knocking out a fresh paint scheme on the yet to be released Illuzion body for the B3.
The 1989-1993 class was the largest and most difficult. JConcepts handed me a fresh Masami car but with new JCON carbon, aluminum, and steel option parts. We also had a new Protector body for the vehicle, so it was very fresh and required a lot of work to find something a little more drivable. A lot of us racing this car worked together to find a setup throughout the weekend and we were getting closer. A few more events and key items will bring this platform alive but I’ll leave that to the vintage experts. 👍🏻
The setup evolved over the weekend but the results were consistently 2nd or 3rd in qualifying. This vehicle is quite a bit longer, a stiffer platform chassis, and narrow pivot geometry along with no rear toe-in made this car a handful to drive. Ultimately, I got rear hubs from Adam Rayls which helped with rear toe-in. I went with the Rips front tire to smooth the car out. I had some nice and competitive runs but it needed more tuning time that we didn’t have or I didn’t want to endure for a fun weekend of racing with the legends.
In the end, I finished 2nd overall in the 1994-1998 class and had some good moments. I ended up 3rd in the 1989-1993 class after some great battles with Spencer Rivkin and Ryan Cavalieri who were running well all weekend. Congrats to Spencer on the double wins and having great A2 mains to lock it up.
I don’t want to single out anyone, as I wouldn’t want to exclude anyone. However, it was an incredibly enjoyable weekend. It was a fantastic opportunity to catch up and race alongside my own racing and industry heroes. I hope there are more events in the future that bring everyone together, focus on the fun side of RC, and celebrate the heritage of our hobby.
