IFMAR WORLDS FROM THE COUCH: 2WD QUALIFYING
SO MUCH TO PLAY FOR: We’re four rounds of qualifying down, and one to play, and still have almost no idea what the final top 10 lineup will be. Tater Sontag has been amazing today, the young TLR driver with two rounds TQ’s and a 4th is all but locked in to start in the top, but for everybody else there is a lot at stake for tomorrow’s last qualifier.
WHO WILL BE #1? There are still three driver’s fighting for the coveted #1 starting spot – Spencer Rivkin and Dakotah Phend battling with Sontag. Any of the three, with a fastest in round and a fast overall time tomorrow can take the top spot. Changes to the race program to add a little more morning practice and take out a pause in on-track activity means that the track condition issues from 4wd should be better. There is no guarantee they’ll be resolved entirely and it is still possible that the track will be better for the second group. That offers up talent like Cavalieri, Orlowski Maifield, Coelho, among others as potential spoilers. So mixed up is the grid that by my count it’s still mathematically possible (though admittedly unlikely) for Maifield who sits 9th overnight, or Orlowski (currently 16th) to start as high as 3rd come finals time. Special note to Cav who has been impressive today after not quite getting it together during 4wd.
WHO WILL BE IN? There are still a lot of drivers carrying a high point-score with one round left to go – and that opens the door for big moves. Neumann sits on the bubble, but we could easily see Kaerup, Coelho, Batta, Orlowski and Cole Tollard make a run at an A final spot. It’s probably Orlowski with the best chance to jump well up the field. Q5 matters a whole lot.
TEAMS: I spent my morning on the mountain bike, so haven’t watched all the qualifiers closely. From what I did see, the car TLR looked good all day – but particularly in the early rounds, with AE and to a lesser extent Schumacher coming on later in the day. Does this offer up the thought that it’s advantage AE in the last round of qualifying, but with momentum swinging toward them as the finals series progresses? Both XRAY and SWorkz are still a chance to make the main, but don’t look likely to be a factor. It’s very possible that both will miss out.
IN THE END: If I’m going to guess, it’ll be Rivkin and Ongaro in the AE squad vs TLR’s Sontag and Phend in the finals. The Schumacher crew of Cav, Champlin and Orlowski could play spoiler but right now are up against it to qualify high enough. Stranger things have happened though!
The track has looked difficult today, with some cars looking edgy and hard to drive at the limit. It seems from a distance that the AE cars might be a smidge easier to drive in afternoon conditions – and that makes me wonder if it’s advantage Rivkin for a third World Champs tomorrow afternoon? Can’t help rooting for Sontag though, for the underdog fairy-tale World Champs story.
What do you see? Who’s going to force their way in? Who’s going to miss out? Who are you cheering for? And, who’s going to win?
For the rest of the today attention turns to the fortnightly e-buggy world cup at Logan Raceway, in Brisbane. I’m off to get the car packed and go put World Champs inspiration to good use. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s finals!
