It’s time for another wrap-up and fresh report from the Silver State Indoor Championships

It’s time for another wrap-up and fresh report from the Silver State Indoor Championships hosted by The Dirt Racing and held at The South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shoutout to Mike Truhe and Ronnie Rivkin for making the trip over with me while we towed the Rivkin race trailer. Overall, I felt the race was a success finishing 1st in 1/8th nitro truck, 3rd in 1/8th E-truck and 5th in E-buggy. Ended up finishing 14th in 1/8th nitro buggy which was a disappointment considering how the vehicle felt in the A-main warm-up and then early in the race.
________
Anthony Westergaard and the rest of the Dirt crew did a fantastic job on the layout. It was also more professional to have a track freshen up each night to maintain the fluff, consistency, and drivability. The layout was pretty awesome for qualifying and racing and ultimately the surface held up pretty well. Seeding was a little difficult because the first run on the track created the fastest laps, and for the most part, all the top seeding times came out of the round 1. Round 2 felt the most like racing conditions, so relative speed was important and everyone kept an eye on their 2nd round times as a result.
________
Qualifying in day one had some high points and solid runs landing me 2nd on the grid for 1/8th Pro Truggy and 7th position in 1/8th Pro E-buggy. Saturday began the second day of qualifying where I was able to take two top 5 runs in the 1/8th E-truck class to start 5th overall. I only had one really good top 3 run in the 1/8th Pro Buggy class which placed me 8th on the starting grid and a little further back than what I would usually like.
________
For the main events, the warm-ups were in the AM with the mains in the early afternoon. I decided to use the new Recon tire in blue compound for the buggy class which worked well, was consistent on the surface and delivered a lot of forward bite. First up was Pro E-buggy and I finished better than I started which always indicates a better day, I ended up 5th overall and racing in the lead group. Congratulations to JConcepts teammate Dakotah on the victory in the E-buggy class.
________
We followed that up with the 45 minute Nitro Truggy A-main. I was able to get a good start and chased Dakotah for the first half of the race. I settled in and had a good race and led on many occasions. Dakotah encountered an issue near the end of the race which allowed me to take advantage and grab the win. Ryan Lutz and Spencer Rivkin were charging pretty hard at the end, but I felt comfortable with my pace and I ended up with a solid finish. The Tekno equipment was fantastic, ProTek Samurai RM edition engine was powerful and stayed lit the entire time. I chose the Triple Dees tires in green compound and I couldn’t have been more satisfied with the drive.
________
Sunday started out early as well and honestly everything felt really good. E-truggy went well starting 5th and moving into the 3rd place position. Mason Fuller was flawless the entire main event and either Spencer nor myself could really put any dent into the lead. After 10 minutes, Mason was able to take the overall with Spencer 2nd and myself in 3rd for a 1-3 sweep for JConcepts. Personally, I once again went with Recon tires in blue compound for the forward drive and smoothness in the bumpy sections of the track. I was happy with the Hobbywing power tuned to perfection and the ProTek battery power allowing me to finish strong after hard fought 10 minutes.
________
It was finally time for the big show, and the 45 minute 1/8th Pro buggy A-main. After the 2 minute warm-up, things didn’t quite feel as good as they did in the A-main practice session but it was too late to make any changes. Starting in 8th, I didn’t get the breaks in traffic, passes were denied, and I took a lot of time off the clock before I got into a comfortable position. I moved up to 6th with the battle for 3rd to 5th just in front of me. After pit stops cycling in and out, I thought I was in a solid battle for the podium. The last half of the race, I had a few mistakes, it took me out of rhythm and I no longer was in contention. Very upsetting after some good moments in qualifying and A-main practice session.
________
Congratulations to my Tekno RC teammate Marco Baruffolo on a stellar performance and taking the win. Also, JConcepts teammates, Phi-Long Nguyen on an amazing drive in 2nd and Mason Fuller coming through with a 3rd and the final spot on the podium.
________
Time to take a couple of weeks to prep vehicles, test and tune new ideas and latest settings while preparing for the 2023 ROAR 1/8th Scale Off-Road Nationals. Thank you to the Tekno RC team for the hospitality and as always, thanks to Jason, Paul, Hannah, Tyler, and Allison for making the trip from JConcepts. Troy Hanson from A-Main Hobbies / ProTek RC was in support and well represented and helped in anyway possible.
