Mobile experience

Post by House of RC 2y ago News Documents
About two thirds of all people accessing House of RC as guests are coming from a mobile device, for authenticated users it’s about half of the visitors. This probably means that logged in users are doing some more serious work on the site as it will always be easier to use it on the desktop due to the available screen real estate.

This puts the mobile experience high up on the list of things to improve. The site was more built to work best on the desktop but also work ok on the mobile. We want the site to work great on the mobile as well. But having a data drive platform as House of RC is a real challenge to present much information on a small screen, what should be filtered out and how should content flow. Some of the changes mentioned in the previous post about usability was also laying the ground for a better mobile experience.

One of those things were a static toolbar at a top, to always be able to quickly navigate and find your way around the site from just one place. This required a lot of testing as well as looking how other mobile apps has solved the same problem. What we have ended up with is a solution that takes some of the best from each but package it in an easy to use design. From the static navbar you can now open the main menu, access your own account, navigate the breadcrumb, search for anything, see and access your notifications as well as using the shortcut menu to access favourites and organisations in your network. We really hope you like this new navigation system.

But we also put some more action oriented button in the bottom of the screen to create new content or add things to you profile, reload the current page or share it with the world.

But putting too much controls and buttons on the screen takes up important area so we hide them as you scroll down the page, scroll up and they will appear again. Many apps use this metafor today so you should feel right at home. We also had to put some of the features in the top navbar behind a “more” button to access them, this requires an extra click but it was impossible to solve it otherwise.

As discussed earlier we made some changes to usability that also benefits mobile a lot, but we also made som design changes only for the mobile. Such as removing all horizontal padding to fit more content on the screen. We also adjusted the font and the font sizes to improve readability on the small screen.

The mobile is something we always have with us so we wanted to make sure the mobile is where you get your info from House of RC. From day one we have enabled push notifications but we haven’t used it. Now was the time to fully build it into the platform and you will see that you sometimes get a little reminder from House of RC regarding new events, new comments and other important info in your RC life. We will be adding more things to this in the coming releases.

We also fixed a lot of small issues and bugs that have affected the mobile experience, such as uploading files on Android or scrolling big dialogs. We have fixed many bugs and improved a lot of small things that we hope you will notice when you use the new version.

We will also publish new versions of our apps in the App Store and Google Play that has some small improvements and include more native features for dialogs, alerts and toast just to make it integrate better with your phone native experience.

Were really excited for you to test the new mobile experience in House of RC 2.0 when it’s released and hope it will be a well used app on your phone!
