A good comeback after the Euros!
I started practice with the same setup as I used in Fehring, this was of course not ideal but it was more important to try what tires to use. After trying both Astro Max (160mm) and GRP Cross I went with the Astro Max that provided the best grip. AS this track gets pretty bumpy it would have been better with 180 tires but I didn't have any with descent threads left.
The qualifier went well and I drove really consistent with a very low average lap time and almost the fastest lap. It was just 4 hundreds of a second slower than Malcolm which would turn out to be the fastest lap of the day as the track degraded heavily already in the second round.
I started in first position in the 1/8 final and had some early mistakes but could finally turn it around and win it. But already early on I felt this would be a tight racing day with many good drivers and a very challenging track. I still hadn't really tuned the car for the track.
For the quarter final I rated the car some as well as moving in the shocks on the arms to get a softer suspension to better handle all the bumps which had already developed. After half the race I crashed after a jump and could immediately feel that something was wrong with the driveline. Byt the way it felt I was pretty sure it was some axle or something else which had broken since I could feel it was only driving on the rear wheels. I continued driving as I didn't want to end in the bottom two spots which moves you down one step and you automatically loose valuable points. This was a gamble since I could make it all worse by continuing driving and it was 5 minutes left. Forward drive got worse and worse until I barely moved forward but I managed to still finish third but I don't think I could have continued for more than a couple of more laps.
It turned out I had broken a pin in the steering joint so affectively making it a 2wd car but with a center diff which only delivered some power to the rear. As the center diff oil got hotter and hotter I got less and less power to the rear.
I managed to replace the pin in both from joints just to be safe and start in the semi final from third starting position. I got away to a good start and had a fairly comfortable race to the finish line with a win. This gave me most points during the day to start in pole for the final.
The track was prepared just before our 4wd A-final but at this pace of degration the track was back to be really bumpy after just a couple of laps. I pushed a little bit too hard in the beginning and didn't find the best racing lines. I was in third position and the two in front, Robin and Morgan, were pulling away. At that time I felt that I would have to settle for a third place at the best but also decided to try to find a good flow. I find better lines, I adjusted where I applied power I found more speed and a more consistent drive without making too many mistakes. I know that everyone was making mistakes at this time, the track was so hard to drive that the driver who could put it best together would win. After a while as Robin and Morgan fought for the lead I gained on them and then all the sudden I passed Robin as he made a mistake and a while later I also passed Morgan. I think the both made more mistakes then me as I managed to finally lap them as I found a good flow in the second half of the race.
This was a really challenging day of racing, many good drivers and nothing was a given. I really had to focus and keep it together to be able to take the win today. It felt like a good comeback after the Euros and proved that it was a temporary setback. If you never give up and keep on working on your driving the results will come.
I also need to add that I didn't have any of the problems from the Euros regarding fuel overheating or the clutch not engaging. Removing the “heat shield” seems to have done the trick even if the temperatures in Sweden is far from the extremes we had in Fehring.
Finally I want to apologize to Morgan as I caused his front end to break early in the day making him loose many valuable points. That didn't feel good and was of course not my intention at all. I tried to turn around after an accident and unfortunately I hit Morgan who came from behind. Maybe I could have waited or made a better decision but in the heat of the moment you don't always make the right decision. I'm sorry Morgan, you deserved more points today as you drove superbly!
